1. Accreditation, Recognition and HEC Equivalence
Is AIOU recognised?
Yes. Allama Iqbal Open University is listed by the Higher Education Commission as a recognised public university chartered by the Government of Pakistan. HEC also identifies it as a distance-education university.
You can verify its official status through the HEC profile for AIOU.
This makes AIOU the simpler choice when you plan to use your degree mainly for a Pakistani job, promotion, government recruitment or further study in Pakistan.
Is University of the People accredited?
Yes. The WASC Senior College and University Commission currently lists University of the People as Accredited. Its latest recorded Commission action was dated 24 March 2026.
UoPeople is also listed in the World Higher Education Database, which identifies WSCUC as its accrediting agency.
Verify these records through the official WSCUC institution profile and the WHED University of the People record.
Does HEC Automatically Accept a UoPeople Degree?
No automatic acceptance should be assumed. HEC says it recognises higher education from foreign chartered universities that are recognised in their country of origin and available through WHED. However, an individual foreign qualification may still require a formal HEC equivalence application. Ask HEC about your exact programme, study mode and intended use before paying.
Check the HEC guidance on recognised foreign institutions and the HEC foreign degree equivalence procedure.

2. Fees: Is University of the People Really Free?
University of the People describes itself as tuition-free. This means it does not charge traditional tuition for attendance. However, tuition-free does not mean cost-free. Students pay an application fee, course assessment fees and possible transfer-credit or third-party evaluation costs.
University of the People fees for 2026–27
| UoPeople programme | Application fee | Assessment fee per course | Number of courses | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Honest Cost Assessment
UoPeople is inexpensive compared with many American universities, but it is not necessarily cheaper than AIOU for a Pakistani student. Currency conversion, payment charges, repeated courses and credential-evaluation costs can increase the real amount you pay.
3. Authentic Student Ratings and Review Evidence
Review scores are useful for understanding flexibility, support and student satisfaction. They do not prove accreditation or HEC recognition. Always check the number of reviews as well as the average score.
| Review source | AIOU rating | UoPeople rating | How you should interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDUopinions | 4.8/5 from 4 reviews. | 4.9/5 from 3,143 reviews. | The AIOU sample is far too small for a reliable head-to-head conclusion. |
| Trustpilot | Too few reviews for meaningful comparison. | 4.2/5 from 2,393 reviews. | UoPeople has substantial review volume, but reviews remain personal opinions rather than regulatory evidence. |
| Common positive themes | Affordability, access and flexible distance learning. | Affordability, international community, flexibility and ability to study while working. | These themes may matter more than the headline score for working adults. |
| Possible concerns | Limited public review evidence makes broad conclusions difficult. | Some reviews mention delayed support, peer assessment, limited live interaction and confusion over the tuition-free claim. | Read recent positive, average and negative reviews before enrolling. |
Check the current ratings directly: AIOU on EDUopinions, UoPeople on EDUopinions and UoPeople on Trustpilot.
Why there is no AIOUHub star rating: assigning our own score would create false precision. Official recognition, actual costs, programme fit and your intended career are more important than an invented rating.
4. Top Five Study Routes Compared
University of the People has a narrower undergraduate portfolio than AIOU. The five comparisons below show where UoPeople may offer value and where AIOU is likely to be the more practical option.
| Study route | AIOU option | UoPeople option and numbers | Rating evidence | Honest recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Business Administration | AIOU offers business, commerce and Accounting and Finance routes with comparatively low local fees. | BS Business Administration: 120 credits, 40 courses and estimated fees of US$7,260. | UoPeople’s overall EDUopinions rating is 4.9/5 from 3,143 reviews; this is not a business-programme-only score. | Choose AIOU for Pakistani jobs and cost. Consider UoPeople if an American business degree clearly supports your international career. |
| 2. Computer Science | AIOU lists a BS Computer Science ODL route with a selected Autumn 2026 first-semester fee of Rs33,050. | BS Computer Science: 120 credits, 40 courses and estimated fees of US$7,260. | EDUopinions shows a strong UoPeople Computer Science rating, but reviews do not replace checking curriculum and employability. | Compare programming languages, projects and course content. Your portfolio can matter more than the foreign degree name. |
| 3. Health Science | AIOU offers several social, education and community-related subjects, but there is no identical comparison across every route. | BS Health Science: 39 courses and estimated total fees of US$7,080. | Institutional review scores do not prove eligibility for clinical or licensed healthcare work. | Do not choose Health Science expecting it to qualify you automatically as a doctor, nurse or licensed clinician. |
| 4. General Studies and Humanities | AIOU provides Associate Degree in Arts and many specialist BS programmes in English, sociology, history and other fields. | BA General Studies: 40 courses and estimated fees of US$7,260; designed particularly for students with prior credit. | A broad institutional score cannot show whether a general degree will help your specific career. | Choose a general degree only when you can connect it to a promotion, postgraduate plan or clear employment goal. |
| 5. Associate Degree or Credit Completion | AIOU offers multiple two-year associate degrees, including Business Administration, Psychology and English. | UoPeople associate degrees require 20 courses and have estimated fees of US$3,660. | Review scores do not tell you whether an associate degree will receive the equivalence you need. | AIOU is generally more economical. UoPeople may suit students who want an American credential and have checked HEC recognition. |

5. Learning Experience and Weekly Workload
How AIOU study works
AIOU uses a semester-based open-distance-learning system. Depending on your programme, study can involve course books or digital materials, assignments, tutors, online workshops, LMS activities and scheduled examinations.
The system is familiar to Pakistani students, but flexibility does not mean that deadlines can be ignored. Workshops, assignments and exams still follow the academic calendar.
How UoPeople study works
UoPeople is entirely online and its programmes generally do not use regular live lectures. Students complete weekly readings, discussion posts, learning journals, written assignments, quizzes and final exams or projects.
The official undergraduate catalogue says that a three-credit course requires approximately 15–17 hours of study per week during a nine-week term. Taking two courses could therefore require roughly 30–34 hours each week.
Peer assessment is a central part of the UoPeople model. Students review classmates’ work, participate in discussions and receive grades partly connected to the quality of their assessments. Some students enjoy the international peer-learning experience; others may prefer more instructor-led grading.
Which Model Is Better for Working Adults?
UoPeople may be easier to access from anywhere because everything happens online. However, weekly participation requirements can be intensive. AIOU is more locally structured and affordable, but its workshops and examination calendar may give you less control over timing.
6. Can AIOU Credits Transfer to University of the People?
UoPeople may award transfer credit after reviewing each course individually. Its catalogue says it generally may award 50% of the credits required for an undergraduate degree, with exceptions up to 75%.
The stated maximum is 45 transfer credits for an associate degree and 90 credits for a bachelor’s degree. Acceptance is at UoPeople’s discretion, and meeting minimum conditions does not guarantee approval.
UoPeople also lists an evaluation fee of US$17 for every course accepted for transfer. Foreign documents may require assessment through a recognised credential-evaluation service.
Do Not Leave AIOU Before Getting a Written Decision
Submit your transcript and course details to UoPeople first. Do not assume that an AIOU associate degree or completed semesters will transfer. Leaving before receiving a formal decision could waste your existing credits, time and fees.
Review the UoPeople transfer-credit guidance.
7. Will UoPeople Give You a US Student Visa or Work Permit?
University of the People is an entirely online institution. It does not provide a traditional residential campus experience or student housing. A student completing the degree from Pakistan should not expect the programme to provide an F-1 campus-study route, Optional Practical Training or an automatic US work opportunity.
Important Visa Warning
Choose UoPeople for its online qualification, international student community or affordability—not because you expect it to move you physically to the United States.
