Independent English-test comparison
Updated: 24 July 2026 | For: Pakistani and AIOU students planning to study in Australia or Canada
AIOUHub is not affiliated with IELTS, the British Council, IDP Education, Pearson PTE, an Australian or Canadian university, or an immigration authority. Requirements, fees and ratings can change. Confirm the exact test and score with your institution before booking.
Choosing between PTE and IELTS is not simply about asking which test is easier. You need to know which version your university accepts, whether it supports your visa purpose, how you perform in a computer test and whether you prefer speaking to a person or into a microphone.
This independent PTE vs IELTS for Australia and Canada guide explains the complete decision. It covers university admission, Australian Student visa evidence, Canadian study permits, post-graduation requirements, scoring, result times, retakes and the three main booking providers available to Pakistani students.
The most important point appears early because it can prevent an expensive mistake:
PTE Academic or IELTS Academic may satisfy a Canadian university’s admission requirement. A later Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit application instead accepts PTE Core or IELTS General Training. Your original academic test should not automatically be assumed to cover every future immigration purpose.
Quick Verdict
```Choose IELTS when you:
- Prefer speaking with a trained examiner.
- Want the option of retaking only one skill where available and accepted.
- Are comfortable writing conventional essays and reports.
- Want a test recognised across an exceptionally wide range of institutions.
- May later take IELTS General Training for Canadian post-study or immigration purposes.
Choose PTE when you:
- Type quickly and confidently.
- Prefer a completely computer-based test.
- Feel less nervous speaking into a microphone than facing an examiner.
- Perform well on short, integrated and highly structured tasks.
- Want a result that is typically issued within two business days.
PTE vs IELTS for Australia and Canada at a Glance
| Feature | IELTS Academic | PTE Academic | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer-delivered in official test centres, with selected Writing on Paper availability depending on market. | Completely computer-based in a secure test centre. | PTE requires complete comfort with a computer. IELTS still uses a human Speaking examiner. |
| Speaking | Interactive interview with a trained examiner. | Recorded through a headset and microphone, often while other candidates are speaking nearby. | Choose based on whether human interaction or microphone recording produces your best speech. |
| Scoring | Band scale from 0 to 9 in whole and half bands. | Numerical scale from 10 to 90, using automated scoring with human review for selected content tasks. | Neither scale is inherently easier; the institution chooses its minimum. |
| Approximate length | Listening, Reading and Writing total around 2 hours 30 minutes, plus an 11–14 minute Speaking test. | Approximately two hours, varying with the test form. | PTE is generally more compact but requires sustained computer concentration. |
| Results | IELTS on computer results are usually available in one to two days, although local guidance may allow longer. | Most results arrive within two business days; some take up to five. | Both now offer fast results, so speed alone should not decide your test. |
| Retaking | One Skill Retake may allow one component to be repeated within 60 days. | A new PTE booking normally requires retaking the full test. | IELTS has an advantage when only one component misses the target and the recipient accepts OSR. |
| Australian Student visa | IELTS Academic is approved when valid English evidence is required. | PTE Academic is approved when valid English evidence is required. | Both are valid options, subject to the applicable score and secure-centre rules. |
| Canadian university admission | Widely accepted, but the programme sets the score. | Accepted by many institutions, but not automatically every programme. | Check your exact Canadian DLI and course before booking. |
| Canadian PGWP | IELTS General Training is accepted; IELTS Academic is not the listed option. | PTE Core is accepted; PTE Academic is not the listed option. | You may need a different test version after graduation. |
PTE or IELTS for Australia?
Both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are strong choices for studying in Australia. Australian universities commonly accept both, but each course can set its own overall and component requirements.
Australian University Admission
Begin with your selected course page. Do not use another university’s score or a general conversion chart as proof that you qualify.
A programme may require:
- A minimum overall IELTS or PTE result.
- A separate minimum in every component.
- A higher Writing or Speaking result for particular subjects.
- A more demanding score for teaching, nursing, psychology, law or another professionally regulated programme.
For example, one university may treat IELTS 6.5 and PTE 58 as suitable for a general postgraduate course, while another may require PTE 64 or a particular result in every skill. The course page and written offer conditions are the final sources.
Australian Student Visa
For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Australia’s approved Student visa test list includes:
- IELTS Academic.
- IELTS General Training.
- PTE Academic.
- Several other approved secure-centre tests.
The test must be valid for your visa category and completed through an accepted secure testing centre. Australia does not accept IELTS Online, remote-proctored PTE or similar at-home tests for visa evidence.
Which Is Better for Australia?
You type efficiently, like computer-based tasks, speak confidently into a microphone and perform well on integrated activities that combine reading, listening, speaking and writing.
You prefer a natural Speaking interview, have strong conventional essay-writing skills or want access to One Skill Retake where your university and visa purpose accept it.
Australia verdict: PTE has a slight practical advantage for confident computer users. IELTS has a flexibility advantage for students who prefer human Speaking and may benefit from One Skill Retake. Neither has a universal admission advantage.
PTE or IELTS for Canada?
The Canadian answer requires more care because admission, study permits, post-graduation work permits and permanent immigration can use different tests.
Canadian University or College Admission
A Canadian designated learning institution decides which English tests and scores it accepts. IELTS Academic is widely accepted. PTE Academic is also accepted by many universities and colleges, but students should never assume that every institution or individual programme accepts it.
Check four details:
- Does the institution accept the test?
- Does the exact programme accept it?
- What overall result is required?
- What minimum is required in each skill?
Canadian Study Permit
Canada’s general study-permit eligibility rules focus on enrolment at a designated learning institution, sufficient finances, admissibility, health where relevant and satisfying the immigration officer that you will respect your authorised stay.
The general eligibility page does not publish one universal IELTS or PTE score for every study-permit applicant. Your language evidence normally begins with the institution’s admission requirement, although an immigration officer can consider your overall readiness and supporting evidence.
Check official Canadian study-permit eligibility
Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit
Applicants submitting a Post-Graduation Work Permit application on or after 1 November 2024 generally need proof of English or French ability, unless a stated exception applies.
For English, IRCC lists:
- IELTS General Training.
- PTE Core.
- CELPIP-General.
IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are not the listed PGWP test versions. This means that a student may take one academic test for university admission and another test version near graduation.
The PGWP requirement depends on the programme and applicant’s circumstances. The language results must generally be less than two years old when the PGWP application is submitted.
Check PGWP language documents | Check IELTS and PTE Core CLB scores
Which Is Better for Canada?
IELTS may be the safer admission choice when your Canadian shortlist is still broad because IELTS Academic is familiar to a large range of universities and colleges.
PTE Academic is a strong alternative when every selected institution accepts it and you perform substantially better in computer-based testing.
Neither academic version avoids the later PGWP language requirement. IELTS candidates may later take General Training, while PTE candidates may later take PTE Core.
Do not select a test because an outdated article promises faster Canadian processing based on a former SDS score. Use the current study-permit and PGWP rules published by IRCC.
IELTS and PTE Test Formats Explained
IELTS Academic Format
IELTS measures Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking as four recognisable sections.
Listening: Approximately 30 minutes with 40 questions covering conversations and monologues.
Academic Reading: Sixty minutes, three passages and 40 questions.
Academic Writing: Sixty minutes. Task 1 requires a report based on visual information, while Task 2 requires an essay. Task 2 carries twice the Writing weight of Task 1.
Speaking: An 11–14 minute structured conversation with an examiner covering familiar questions, an individual long turn and a broader discussion.
IELTS announced that traditional paper-based delivery would be phased out from mid-2026, with exact timing varying by market. Selected locations may offer a Writing on Paper option while the remaining sections stay computer-delivered. Check current Pakistan availability before booking.
PTE Academic Format
PTE Academic is completed at a computer in one test session. Its three broad parts are:
- Speaking and Writing.
- Reading.
- Listening.
Many PTE questions are integrated. One task can contribute to more than one skill score. For example, a response may test listening and speaking or reading and writing simultaneously.
The enhanced PTE Academic test introduced two additional Speaking tasks in August 2025:
- Respond to a Situation.
- Summarize Group Discussion.
The test now uses 22 question types. It remains approximately two hours long, although the actual duration varies slightly by test form.
Speaking: Human Examiner or Microphone?
This is often the factor that decides the test.
IELTS Speaking may suit you when:
- You communicate better through eye contact and natural conversation.
- You can develop answers when an examiner reacts or asks a follow-up question.
- You dislike hearing other candidates speaking nearby.
- Your pronunciation is understandable but you worry about microphone technique.
PTE Speaking may suit you when:
- You feel anxious in face-to-face interviews.
- You can speak immediately after an electronic prompt.
- You maintain a stable pace without waiting for listener feedback.
- You can concentrate while other candidates are speaking in the same room.
PTE does not reward an artificial accent. Clear pronunciation, accurate content and controlled oral fluency matter more than trying to sound British, Australian or Canadian.
Writing: Traditional Essays or Integrated Tasks?
IELTS Writing provides two longer tasks. It suits students who can plan paragraphs, develop an argument and manage formal academic prose.
PTE includes shorter written and integrated tasks alongside essay writing. Performance can contribute across skills, so a weakness in one repeated task type may affect more than one score.
Choose IELTS when you are stronger at sustained writing. Choose PTE when you type efficiently and perform well on short, structured tasks under computer timing.
How IELTS and PTE Scores Compare
IELTS uses a 0–9 band scale. PTE uses a 10–90 scale. There is no perfect one-to-one conversion because the tests use different tasks and scoring systems.
Pearson’s July 2025 research provides these estimated overall alignments:
IELTS 6.0: approximately PTE 47–54 overall
IELTS 6.5: approximately PTE 55–62 overall
IELTS 7.0: approximately PTE 63–70 overall
IELTS 7.5: approximately PTE 71–78 overall
These ranges are research-based estimates, not automatic admission rules. An institution can set a specific requirement such as IELTS 6.5 or PTE 60, 62, 64 or another score. It can also require minimum component scores that differ from the overall concordance.
Check Pearson’s current score comparison
Which Test Gives Faster Results?
This used to be a clear PTE advantage. The difference is now much smaller.
PTE Academic: Pearson states that most test takers receive results within two business days. Some cases can take up to five business days.
IELTS on computer: IELTS states that results are generally available in one to two days. Individual Pakistan provider pages may describe a window of up to five days.
Choose based on your stronger test format rather than assuming PTE is always dramatically faster.
IELTS One Skill Retake vs Full PTE Retake
IELTS One Skill Retake can allow a computer-test candidate to repeat Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking once within 60 days of the original test.
Before relying on it, confirm:
- Your original test centre offers One Skill Retake.
- Your university accepts the combined result.
- The relevant visa or professional body accepts it.
- You can complete the retake within 60 days.
PTE candidates normally retake the complete test. Pearson permits another booking after the previous score has been released, subject to its retake limits and booking rules.
How to Choose the Right Test in Six Steps
Write whether the result is for Australian university admission, an Australian Student visa, Canadian admission, a Canadian PGWP or another immigration purpose. Do not describe the purpose only as “going abroad.”
Create a shortlist and record the accepted tests, overall score, component minimums and result-validity period for every programme.
Attempt an IELTS Reading, Writing and Speaking sample. Then complete a PTE familiarisation activity using a headset and microphone. Compare performance rather than choosing from opinions.
Record yourself speaking into a microphone while background audio is playing. Also complete a live practice interview. Select the format in which your speech remains clearer and more developed.
Check live dates, test centres, test fees, travel costs, rescheduling rules and potential retake costs. Prices vary by city and can change.
Do not spend several weeks switching between IELTS and PTE strategies. Once acceptance and personal fit are confirmed, focus on the exact format you will take.
Choose IELTS Based on Your Learning Style
IELTS is likely to suit you when:
- You are a confident conversational speaker.
- You prefer independent skill scores rather than many integrated tasks.
- You can write a structured report and essay by developing paragraphs.
- You prefer traditional Reading passages and question types.
- You want a possible one-skill retake route.
Choose PTE Based on Your Learning Style
PTE is likely to suit you when:
- You type quickly with few spelling mistakes.
- You can speak immediately after an electronic prompt.
- You prefer a single computer-based session.
- You perform well on tasks combining more than one skill.
- You can maintain concentration in a shared computer testing room.
Three English-Test Providers Reviewed
IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Booking through British Council or IDP does not create an easier or harder IELTS examination. The scoring standard and test construct remain IELTS standards.
Your provider choice mainly affects test-centre location, available dates, preparation benefits, booking support and local administration.
The Trustpilot scores below are July 2026 snapshots. The British Council and IDP profiles cover broader international services and are not limited to IELTS testing in Pakistan.
1. British Council IELTS Pakistan: Best Included Official Preparation
British Council Pakistan offers official IELTS bookings, test-centre information, free preparation and access to its Test Taker Portal.
2. IDP IELTS Pakistan: Best for Location and Booking Choice
IDP is an IELTS co-owner and operates IELTS bookings in Pakistan through IDP centres and authorised partners, including AEO locations.
IDP Pakistan provides:
- IELTS Academic and General Training booking.
- IELTS for UKVI options where available.
- IELTS One Skill Retake at eligible centres.
- Free preparation resources and practice events.
- Online result access.
- Study-abroad counselling services that remain separate from the test result itself.
Current IDP date pages show IELTS on computer examples around PKR 71,300–71,920 depending on centre and location. This is not a universal national price, and the live booking total should always be checked.
Trustpilot snapshot: IDP Education shows approximately 4.1/5 from 159 reviews. Many positive reviews concern counselling and university-application assistance rather than IELTS testing. Critical reviews include test-centre administration and communication concerns.
- Official IELTS co-owner.
- Multiple centres and dates.
- Clear Pakistan booking pages.
- Preparation hub and practice events.
- One Skill Retake at eligible centres.
- Fees differ by location.
3. Pearson PTE Academic: Best for Complete Computer Testing
Pearson develops and administers PTE Academic. Unlike IELTS, there is no separate British Council or IDP-style choice between co-owner booking providers.
PTE Academic offers:
- A single computer-based testing session.
- A score from 10 to 90.
- Integrated question types.
- Results typically within two business days.
- Free electronic score sharing through the myPTE account.
- Official Smart Prep resources and purchasable scored practice tests.
PTE introduced two new Speaking tasks and additional human content review for selected question types in August 2025. It remains primarily computer-scored.
Trustpilot snapshot: Pearson PTE shows approximately 2.0/5 from 714 reviews. The profile’s review summary highlights frequent dissatisfaction with customer service, identification updates and delayed support. Some reviewers positively mention fast results and smooth test-centre experiences.
- Complete computer delivery.
- Fast typical score release.
- Free electronic result sharing.
- Detailed Skills Profile.
- Strong suitability for computer-confident learners.
- Passport information must match exactly.
- Speaking occurs in a shared room.
- Full retest is normally required.
- Customer-support reviews are weak.
- Every university must be checked individually.
Independent recommendation: PTE is the strongest choice for a fast, completely computer-based experience when every shortlisted institution accepts it and your diagnostic practice confirms that the microphone format suits you.
- Check every component minimum separately.
- Confirm the result’s validity for the intended application.
- Send the official score through the provider’s system.
- Do not submit only a screenshot when official electronic verification is required.
- When one IELTS component is low, check One Skill Retake acceptance before booking.
- When a PTE component is low, review the error profile before scheduling a full retest.
Common Mistakes Pakistani Students Should Avoid
- Taking PTE Core for university admission. PTE Academic is normally the study-focused version; Core is used for specified Canadian immigration purposes.
- Using IELTS Academic for a Canadian PGWP. IRCC lists IELTS General Training for that purpose.
- Choosing PTE because someone calls it easier. Microphone fluency and integrated tasks can make it harder for some students.
- Choosing IELTS only because it is more familiar. Strong computer users may perform better in PTE.
- Ignoring component scores. A qualifying overall result may still fail the programme requirement.
- Using an at-home test for an Australian visa. Australian visa evidence must meet secure-centre rules.
- Relying on an unofficial conversion chart. Use the institution’s stated score.
- Booking with an incorrect passport name. Identity mismatches can prevent testing and complicate refunds.
- Sending a PTE PDF instead of an electronic score. Use the myPTE score-sharing function.
- Assuming one academic test covers future immigration. Canadian PGWP and permanent-residence routes can require General or Core versions.
Our Honest Recommendation
Best for Australia: PTE Academic for confident computer users; IELTS Academic for students preferring human Speaking or One Skill Retake flexibility.
```Best for a broad Canadian university shortlist: IELTS Academic, unless every chosen institution clearly accepts PTE Academic and your PTE diagnostic result is stronger.
Best for fast computer testing: PTE Academic.
Best for natural conversation: IELTS Academic.
Best when only one skill may need repeating: IELTS, provided One Skill Retake is available and accepted.
Best overall choice: The test accepted by every selected programme in which your timed diagnostic performance is strongest.

10 Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Not universally. PTE can feel easier to fast typists and students comfortable speaking into a microphone. IELTS can feel easier to students who prefer human conversation, separate skills and conventional essay writing.
2. Is PTE accepted for an Australian Student visa?
Yes. PTE Academic is on Australia’s approved English-test list when Student visa language evidence is required. The test must satisfy the applicable score, validity and secure-centre conditions.
3. Is IELTS accepted for an Australian Student visa?
Yes. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are approved options under the current Australian list, subject to the requirements applying to the applicant.
4. Is PTE Academic accepted by Canadian universities?
Many Canadian universities and colleges accept PTE Academic, but acceptance is not universal. Check the exact designated learning institution and programme.
5. Which IELTS test should I take for Canadian university admission?
Canadian university applicants normally use IELTS Academic when the institution accepts IELTS. IELTS General Training serves different immigration and practical-language purposes.
6. Can I use PTE Academic for a Canadian PGWP?
No. IRCC currently lists PTE Core for English evidence in applicable PGWP applications. PTE Academic is a separate study-focused test.
7. Can I use IELTS Academic for a Canadian PGWP?
No. IRCC currently directs applicable PGWP applicants using IELTS to take the General Training option.
8. Which test gives results faster?
Both are now fast. PTE results usually arrive within two business days, while IELTS on computer results are commonly issued within one to two days. Individual results can take longer.
9. Can I retake only one PTE skill?
PTE candidates normally retake the complete test. IELTS may offer One Skill Retake within 60 days, subject to test-centre availability and recipient acceptance.
10. Which test is best for AIOU students?
AIOU students comfortable with independent digital learning may adapt well to PTE. Students who communicate better through conversation or prefer conventional academic writing may perform better in IELTS. Complete timed practice in both formats before deciding.
Final Verdict
There is no single winner in the PTE vs IELTS for Australia and Canada decision.
For Australia, both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are credible university and Student visa options. PTE is attractive for fast typists and confident computer users. IELTS is stronger for natural speakers and candidates who value the possibility of One Skill Retake.
For Canada, IELTS Academic is often the safer choice when you are applying to a broad range of institutions, while PTE Academic is valuable when every shortlisted programme accepts it and your computer-test performance is stronger.
Remember that Canadian post-graduation applications use different test versions: IELTS General Training or PTE Core. Do not assume that your university-admission test will satisfy every later immigration requirement.
British Council provides the strongest included IELTS preparation package. IDP may offer a more convenient IELTS centre or date. Pearson PTE provides the clearest completely computer-based route. Compare live availability, rules and total costs before paying.
Choose the test from official acceptance evidence and your own diagnostic performance—not from claims that one exam is always easier.
